We are thrilled to announce the official opening of Ireland’s first large-scale district heating network in Tallaght. The Tallaght District Heating Scheme now provides low-carbon heat to South Dublin Council’s County Hall building, library complex, and buildings in the TU Dublin Tallaght campus. The scheme will expand to supply heat to the Innovation Centre and nearby affordable apartments before connecting more customers in later phases.
Waste heat from the nearby Amazon data center is being used and is covering 100% of the heat demand during normal operation. The Tallaght District Heating Scheme will significantly reduce carbon emissions, saving nearly 1,500 tonnes of CO2 annually and establishing Tallaght as a leader in climate change innovation.
Operating as Heat Works, the scheme is the first not-for-profit heat utility in Ireland, fully owned and operated by South Dublin County Council. Heat Works aims to be a model heat network business, delivering economic, environmental, and social benefits to residents and businesses.
