Public Engagement and Communication

We are living in an unprecedented time with the decisions made in the next few years impacting the lives of the people in Dublin for decades to come. This rapid and urgent change that is needed will not succeed unless we effectively engage everyone, most importantly the people living, working and studying in Dublin.
We are committed to communicating clearly and honestly about what is needed to move Dublin away from fossil fuels towards a healthier and more livable region. We will continue to advocate for and provide opportunities for the people of Dublin to have their say on how we use and produce energy across the county.
Zero Together Survey
In September 2021, as a first step towards engaging people across the region, a Zero Together survey was published to capture the views of people living, working and studying in Dublin. We heard from over 1,000 people about how we can best move the region away from fossil fuels.
We heard about how often people think they use energy everyday, who they feel is most responsible for moving Dublin away from fossils, who is most trusted when it comes to information on energy and the climate crisis. People told us what actions they already taking towards reducing emissions such as active travel and using energy more efficiently. We also heard about the main barriers preventing people from taking action such as lack of finance, infrastructure and information.
A few insights relating to engagement really captured our attention. For example, 71% of respondents of the Zero Together survey felt their views and concerns on how we produce and use energy in Dublin are rarely or never taken into account. This demonstrates that the people of Dublin want to be engaged and have their views included in how their county reduces emissions and moves away from fossil fuels. This survey also told us how the people want to be engaged going forward as nearly 700 respondents (68%) said that would like initiatives “that allow people living and working in Dublin to discuss, propose and vote on actions that could be presented to local authorities and national government”. Watch our video below for more results from our survey.
Postcards from Dublin 2050
In 2022, we embarked on an ambitious campaign to capture a vision of Dublin in 2050 created by the people of Dublin. As part of this campaign, we asked the people of Dublin to share their vision of our capital free from fossil fuels in the form of a postcard from the future. We held workshops with businesses, young people and energy communities in Dublin and launched an online form for people to submit their visions. So far, nearly 300 people have written a postcard from 2050 and told us what version of Dublin they’d like to see.
The visions we receive will help us understand what is important to people living, working, studying, travelling in Dublin as we move away from fossil fuels. Read some of the imaginative postcards below and share your vision for Dublin in 2050 by writing your very own postcard here.
